Chocolate lovers rejoice! Bittersweet Café comes to Danville

Chocolaholics, there’s a new place for you to get your chocolate groove on. Bittersweet: The Chocolate Café opened Sept. 5 in Danville’s Rose Garden Center (Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon). Bittersweet touts a mission everyone can embrace: “to bring you the best the world of chocolate has to offer.”

To that end, the café presents a menu of hot, cold, and frozen chocolate drinks, teas and coffees, truffles, plus pastries and soups. For the aficionado, an impressive array of dark and milk chocolates from around the world are available for purchase. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the choices displayed but customers are invited to sample any confection in the Bittersweet cupboard. One subtle yet satisfying offering: dark chocolate with wasabi and sesame seeds.

On a first visit, we found the chocolate milkshake to be on the thin side, more like icy-cold chocolate milk. However, a second visit led us to their bicerin – dark chocolate, espresso and a floater of whipped cream – and, in that selection, we found a bit of heaven. It was a delightful blend of hot and cold temperatures, smooth and thick textures that felt good all the way down. Next time we’ll bring a book to read as we sit and savor a bicerin…or come in our footed pj’s and nestle in for the afternoon.

Besides the Danville café, Bittersweet owners operate cafes in San Francisco and the Rockridge area of Oakland; a fourth location in Orinda is planned. All Bittersweet cafés host public and private tasting events. Sweet.
