Samberg Goes Ape

Berkeley native and Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg was featured on the cover of Diablo last August to coincide with his big screen debut, Hot Rod. That movie grossed a modest $14 mil at the box office worldwide, then had a solid second lap on DVD. This month, Samberg is back in movie theaters again … kind of.

In the digitally animated Space Chimps, Samberg provides the voice for Ham III, the slacker grandson of the first chimp astronaut. Ham III goes on his own star trek, to take on the nefarious leader of a faraway planet. Hilarity, of the G-rated variety, ensues.

Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld) and Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) provide the voices of Ham’s copilots, and keep your ears out for Concord-native Carlos Alazraqui (Reno: 911!) as the voice of mission-control Houston.

Space Chimps hits theaters on July 18, entering the box office space race with Pixar’s WALL-E. The latest feature from the Emeryville animation studio,
due for release in late June, also features a sci-fi story.
